Children’s Book Week® is an event that school libraries support Australia wide. For many schools the annual dress up parade is added to the calendar and is either excitedly prepared for by parents or dreaded! Below are ideas from many sources, including WASLA members.
SUGGESTIONS:
Penguin – from Frank’s Red Hat by Sean Avery – wear a red beanie and a penguin onesie
Giraffe – from Bev and Kev by Katrina Germein and Mandy Foot – wear a headband with ears and spots on a yellow t-shirt
Llama’s – from Llama’s in Pyjamas by Matt Cosgrove –
Grandma – from What Do you Call your Grandma by Ashleigh Barton
Butterfly – from The Butterfly Circus by Francesca Armour-Chelu – Black clothes and Butterfly wings (Kmart – Butterfly Wing Cape $5)
Bear – from Bear in Space by Deborah Abel – bear onesie, yellow boots and a soft drink bottle backpack, or the panda with a panda onesie and some boots
Rainbow Bear – from Rainbow Bear by Stephen Michael King – white outfit and add colours with sharpies or fabric paint
Grandma Poss – from Possum Magic by Men Fox – purple apron with stars, brown ears and tail
Lighthouse Keeper – from The Lighthouse Keepers Lunch by Ronda Armitage and David Armitage – yellow raincoat, black pants, red boots
Colours – from The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt – suggested as a great group outfit with everyone wearing a single different colour and holding a picture drawn in that colour
From Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett – wear jeans with fake veins winding around legs, flowers in hair and a key on a string around neck
From Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney – wear t-shirt and jeans with cartoon ‘wimpy kid’ face on paper/card as a mask
From Weirdo by Anh Do – wear striped t-shirt, shorts or pants, add a cartoon face on a stick as mask
Ellie – from Ellie’s Dragon by Bob Graham – dress in regular clothes (could match to one of Ellie’s pictures if desired) and have a stuffed toy dragon or a picture of a dragon
Macca the Alpaca by Matt Cosgrove – there are mask templates on Matt’s website (here) that can be printed and constructed for a quick costume. You could dress in white as Macca or brown as Al
Pick a character from a book from the EC shortlisted picture books each year
